Sometimes some of the best things get overlooked because they are not what we are used to or we simply don't know about them. In the northwest the Smallmouth bass is one of those things. While Salmon, Steelhead, and Sturgeon will always reign supreme in most anglers minds the Smallmouth has many redeeming qualities that make it one of the best bets for a great day on the water. First they are plentiful, unlike Salmon, the Smallmouth is highly prized mostly as a game fish so the majority are released unharmed to grow and multiply. Second, they are fighters pound for pound they put up a battle that would put most other freshwater fish to shame. Combined with the right tackle it is a blast to spend the day fighting scrappy fish that regularly run up to three pounds and sometimes weigh five or more. Lastly they are biters, while fishing is very fun, catching is better and Smallmouth are usually one of the more aggressive fish available to northwest anglers. While a finicky trout will often turn his nose at even the most well presented fly or a sulking Chinook salmon will sometimes let even the best baits pass him by all day without budging from his resting place, a Smallmouth is usually happy to grab whatever well fished fly or lure passes through his general area.
