Current Fishing Reports

9-21-09

Its been a few weeks since we updated the reports page but I finally had a chance to sit down in front of my computer and put pen to paper so to speak. First of all it appears as though the predictions for a mega run of silver salmon are true as they are showing in great numbers pretty much everywhere. I spent a couple of days this month chasing them on the Clack and though the number of fish in the river was very good the bite was very slow. clear, warm water and bright sun had the fish so spooky that even eggs under a float sent most of the running. A couple of bites a day was normal and some days saw us struggle to get even that. That's the funny thing about silvers, they can be super aggressive under the right conditions or they can be near impossible to catch when they decide they are not in the mood. Now to the good news. We made our first trip of the fall season down the Trout Creek to Harpum flats section of the Deschutes this last week and even though it was a few weeks earlier than we normally fish it we were not disappointed. In a three day float we managed to swing up about a dozen steelhead and while we lost more than we landed they were all hot fish caught with almost no pressure on the upper river yet. When you add in the abundance of slab sided jumbo trout feeding on prolific hatches of caddis it was almost too good to be true. If the early season is this good I cannot wait to see what the peak of season brings. We still have two three day trips that have not filled up yet, these are the 12th, 13th, 14th and the 19th, 20th, 21st of October. If you were on the fence about coming to the Deschutes this year don't miss your chance to fish what is shaping up to be an epic season.
